Jacob B, Year 7, who is part of the Northgate News Team, decided to interview Mr Kemp, who has been part of the Drama Department this year. Here’s what he had to say in response to Jacob’s questions:
What first inspired you to get into drama?
My drama teacher at Wymondham College, who helped me audition for and get into the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain.
Who is your biggest inspiration in theatre or film?
Last year I saw Hadestown the musical in the West End and was blown away by the songs, live music and storytelling! It’s actually coming to Norwich next year, so book your tickets and check it out.
What’s your favourite play or musical, and why?
A Midsummer Night’ s Dream by William Shakespeare because it is timeless, silly and can be interpreted in many ways.
What do you enjoy most about teaching drama?
I love seeing groups enjoy the creative process, working together and surprising me with their originality and imagination.
Have you ever performed on stage or been in a production?
Yes, at drama school and as an actor.
What skills do students learn from drama that help in real life?
They learn how to articulate their ideas and feelings, communicate with others and build a sense of empathy for what other people may feel and experience.
If your life was a play, what would it be called?
Nothing is permanent, nothing is planned.
What are your hobbies outside of school?
I play the guitar, love disappearing in a good book and the odd bit of baking.
If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be doing?
I would still be acting or possibly running a theatre company.
What’s a fun fact about you that students might not know?
I lived in Vietnam for 8 years.
