Poster Competition – British Science Week

As part of British Science Week, we are running a poster competition for years 7-9. The theme for the poster is: Exploration and Discovery. Your poster design can be about anything involving exploration and discovery.

  • Entries must be 2D and submitted on one side of A4 or A3 paper only.
  • Work must be original and created by the student
  • Posters must include the following information (entrant details can be on the back of the poster):
    • entrant name (all names if a team) and entrant age (all ages if a team)
    • entrant year group

The five best posters will be sent to the British Science Association and a panel of judges will select a winner out of all the UK entries. The two runners up will be uploaded to their Facebook page and the public will decide on a fifth ‘popular vote’ winner.

The winner will win a selection of exciting STEM related hands-on activities and books. These may include AugmentifyIt augmented reality playing cards, experiments from John Adams or amazing Spy Kits from Project Mc2. Books and magazines in this year’s prizes may include Mister Sea Horse,  Little Miss Inventor, Science and Stuff, James’ Giant Bug Book and the latest OKIDO magazine. Runners up will each receive a book or magazine.

Please hand your poster entries to Miss Simms by Friday 23rd March. You can get some inspiration from the Guinness World Records here.

Northgate takes Science to Toftwood Junior School

Northgate takes Science to Toftwood Junior School

On Tuesday 13th March three Science teachers from Northgate visited Toftwood Junior School to lead interactive science sessions as part of British Science Week.

The sessions were held for Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils and encouraged them to ‘think scientifically’ in aspects of their methodology and collecting data.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and the Northgate teachers were thrilled to have the opportunity to visit Toftwood and lead the sessions – thank you.

Mrs Beasley said of the day ‘The day was fantastic, the Toftwood pupils were wonderful and Year 5 designed an amazing space suit for Tim Peake’s next space walk!’

Shakespeare Week

As part of Shakespeare Week, our English Department are releasing their favourite Shakespeare quotes every day. Keep checking back to see a new quote every day this week.

Cricket Success for Ebony!

As we’ve mentioned in previous blogs, we have some very talented sports people at Northgate and we love to hear about and celebrate their successes.

Ebony Palmer, Year 8 has written the following for us:

Ebony with her trophy.

‘The John Greeves Cricket Award is presented by John Greeves, who is an ex Bircham club cricketer. The award is given for the best performance during the season for anybody who plays for Bircham Cricket Club. I was awarded this trophy for bowling figures of four overs and no maidens and 17 runs, and 5 wickets in an under 14s boys league match. Also I’m the first female to get five wickets for any Bircham team! Every year we have a presentation where you can be awarded a trophy in different categories, but the most amazing thing that night was that John Greeves picked me to have this award as I got 5 for 17.’

A huge well done to Ebony for receiving this award. She is putting her cricketing skills to good use representing Northgate too and has already taken part in a competition this season where Northgate were crowned champions!
