The Northgate Learning Cycle

At the heart of all learning in our school is our Learning Cycle (established January 2017). We follow Sweller’s ‘Cognitive Load Theory’ – a research-based model which allows students to build up ‘Core’ knowledge and application of skills much sooner. This approach means that students do not become overloaded with extraneous knowledge; building confidence in their ability to succeed.

All schemes of work, homework and classroom practice have been built around this.

With this method regular, carefully monitored testing ensured that the ‘fear’ of assessment is minimised as it simply becomes part of the lesson cycle. Instead, we focus on what can be done differently in the future to improve skills and knowledge.

We believe this grounding in an established model of learning is a key factor in the success that our students have.
