There were a huge number of activities taking place during world book week – here’s a run down:
First up there was a bake a story competition. Congratulations to Charlotte who won with her showstopper. Jessica (Year 7) from the Northgate News Team spoke to her after her win.
‘Charlotte based her cake on Animal Farm because she has been learning about it in class. It took her 4-5 hours to make! The flavour of the cake was chocolate. In the competition she thought she might come in 3rd or 4th place, as she thought the competition was quite tough. For her winning cake she was given a hot chocolate set and a card that said 1st place on it. If she had another chance what would she change? She said if they are learning about a different book, she would base it on that.’

Natalie (Year 7), from the Northgate News Team took part in the Mad Hatters Tea Party. Here’s what she had to say:
‘The Mad Hatters tea party was great fun. We had lots of treats and the library was decorated awesomely. We got to take part in two very fun activities. One was throwing sugar into a cup. If you got a sugar lump in the cup you scored a point for your team. At the end of the sugar throwing contest. Whoever with the most points won that round. The second activity was a pancake relay. We had a pan per team and we ran up and down the corridor in a relay whilst flipping a book in the pan. Every five minutes Mrs Gill would shout “Move along.” Which was brilliant. It was great and I really appreciate Mrs Gill putting her time and effort into this because it was such a great event and I definitely will come back next year. If there is an opportunity for me to do so.’

Emily (Year 7) took part in the sponsored readathon for Read for Good and told us about the experience:
Why did you want to take part?
I have never done anything like the readathon and I enjoy reading. I also had a series of books I got that I hadn’t read yet.
Which books did you decide to read?
I decided to read the series Heroes of Olympus as Rick Riordan is one of my favourite authors and I’ve finished the entire Percy Jackson Series.
What was the experience like?
It was really fun and I was investigating my reading taste by trading books with my friends.
Did you have a target in mind of how many pages you wanted to read?
I wanted to read at least the first book of Heroes of Olympus and that’s about 1000 pages or more altogether.
Why is important for young people to read for pleasure?
To escape reality and even sometimes stress, I think reading can do that.
Do you have a favourite book or author?
Rick Riordan. I’m really fascinated by Greek Mythology and comedy/action books are probably my favourite.

Tutor groups were also invited to decorate their doors on the theme of a book that they were given. The competition was tough. Here are some of the entries below.
There was a book themed menu in Café North on World Book Day – take a look at what was on offer below!

Finally Year 7s and 8s were encouraged to come to school on World Book Day dressed as their favourite book character. Well done to Alex A, Crimson R, Chloe C, Mia B, Tess C, and Evelyn B who won a book of their choice, plus sweets and a certificate.
There was an impressive effort from the teachers too including the English department who all came as Christmas Carol characters.
Everyone who dressed up will receive merits to say thankyou for taking part.
